“The self is constructed from the materials of the culture.”
(OK306)

(These comments are individual thoughts, not a cohesive narrative)

For autistic folks: the self is constructed by witnessing behaviors which are the elements of these materials, but the “glue” or relatedness and continuity is not visible/detectable. Picking up one element to examine it (or even perceiving it) focuses the autistic observer on that element, the “rest of the piece” does not come with it.

And when the “costume” has gaps in it, is brittle/fragile, a gust of wind comes along, the rain falls...

The effort to construct a building results in a stage set which only looks good form the front. One good push and over it goes...

And without glue, the structure may be pretty fragile, unless it is built very robustly. But I feel the structure houses the autistic self, offering protection from the social-interaction “elements”, leaving one naked and exposed when there is a breach of the structure.
