The Rakestraw Family
What's up with us
May 20, 2005
Well it's hard to believe,
but we're about to kick the last chick from the nest. :)
Nick
will be heading up to Gainesville at the end of June to start the Summer
semester at UF. The past few months have been busy. In January he
had orthoscopic surgery on his pitching elbow, so he missed most of the baseball
season while he was doing rehab. The hardest part was not being able
to pitch his senior year until the very end of the season, and watching from the
dugout. May has been a busy month for Nick. After the end
of baseball season, there were: AP exams, the Seniors of Distinction Banquet,
the cords ceremony, senior awards night, the Rotary Scholarship
Dinner (where he won a $500 scholarship), and of course Prom. Check
out Nick's photo album page for lots of
pix.
Derek' life as settled down a little with mostly work
and classes. Of course he does find a little time for extra
curricular activities, like building a poker table and breaking his wrist
playing a pickup game of baseketball. Never a dull moment. Check out
Derek's photo album page for
pix.

Nick is having a busy senior
year with fall baseball, homecoming and all the other assorted senior
activities. In his free time he plays a lot of poker and actually wins, we're
hoping he'll win enough to pay for graduate school... hey it could
happen. Nick's already won some nice awards in High School Click here to see his
accomplishments.
Derek moved out of the dorms and into a real house this
fall.
Can we spell "responsibility"? Check out Derek's photo album page for pix.

Well, we couldn't resist. It was almost time to get Nick a new
car - good grades, making the varsity baseball team, working hard for
that ellusive SAT score and making alot of right decisions - so we
were "just going to look.," but alas, we just couldn't leave
this baby behind (the big green F150), so it now has a new
home! Check out Nick's photo album page
for pix. (Is there a big "sucker" sign on Jerry's forehead? ...do
I have one too?) |

Well, things have been somewhat
normal around here lately (of course that depends on your definition of
normal). No unexpected visists by farm animals, no vehicular crisis
(just 4 speeding tickets so far), and no one sneaking out of second story
windows. :) Nick is having a great year so far. Still good grades and in
the top 5% of his junior class. He was a state finalist in DECA in
the technical writing catgory. He made the Varsity Baseball team as a pitcher
and is working on a new side-arm release - so it's been
interesting. He's planning on also playing football starting this
spring, that should really be interesting. It's going to be a fun filled senior
year next year!
Not much to say about Derek except that he is doing great up at UF.
He joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) fraternity and of course that's been
fun. He came home for Christmas and a few days of Spring Break - the rest
of Spring Break was spent in the Bahamas on a sailboat with his frat
bothers. Gee, think he had fun?
November 13, 2003 Edith's crash
(10/13/03) was on the Fla. Turnpike just south of Stuart.
She was on her way to Orlando to party with the cousins. One of
those pesky passing thunderstorms caused her to hydroplane on a
puddle. As she lost control of the car, she veered towards the
concrete divider on the left, slid up the wall a little, came back down,
then started heading back to the right side of the road.
Fortunately, there weren't any cars coming close enough behind her as she
went from the left side to the |

|
right of the northbound lanes. She went head on
into one of those aluminum guard rails that protect the pillar for an
overpass, but unfortunately she hit the little support
post. Right after the impact, she couldn't move her arms or
legs. A passing car stopped and the man got out and called 911
for her. By the time the ambulance got there she had some feeling
and was able to move her arms and legs a little. She was
taken to a hospital in Stuart, where they did a wonderful job of treating
her, but they felt that airlifting to her the Jackson Memorial for surgery
would be her best chance for less complications and a full recovery.
So a helicopter ride, neck surgery and a titanium plate with four screws
later, she's OK. :) Now she's got 12 weeks in a neck brace (until Jan
8, 2004) and hopefully a full recovery.

Derek's crash (2/6/01) wasn't as dramatic (thank God), but
it is memorable because it was on Lily's birthday, while I was
with her at the hospital getting diagnosed with breast cancer -
definitely not a good day. Derek was coming home from work right at
rush hour on 595 and traffic was packed pretty tight. The traffic
was backed up all the way from the light, up the exit ramp and onto the
exit lane. He was moving into the right lane and had already started
slowing down (which was his saving grace). When the guy in
front of him swerved off the road onto |
 |
the right shoulder, Derek crashed into the rear end of
the stopped on car on the highway in line to exit. He just didn't
have time to react when the guy in front of him disappeared and
"boom" there was a mini van. Derek didn't have a scratch (just
scared to death) and the couple in the minivan weren't hurt either, but
the car was totaled. Hopefully he learned his lesson and looks
2-3 cars ahead, and if he can't see that far ahead he knows he needs to
leave a little more stopping distance.

Nick the "goat hunter" (11/1/03) doesn't have enough
excitement in his life so he and his buddies have to go hop a fence into
a pasture and chase goats at midnight. So one night they get
lucky and actually catch one of the little buggers. What to do
with it now? Gosh... lets stuff it in the back seat of a
car (not Nick's car) take it home (to Nick's house) and
take it to baseball practice the next morning, completely ignoring the
fact that 3 cop cars were zooming down the street to the farm just as the
boys were |
 |
zooming in the other direction. Never mind that there's
nowhere to actually keep the goat overnight and then the next day until it gets
dark again, or that our fence is missing one gate, or that we don't have rope to
tie it up with, or that the goat would probably eat anything and everything in
sight including the rope if we had one, or that if the poor little goat got
loose he'd end up as either road kill or goat soup, or that keeping the goat for
24 hours was 23.75 hours too long to hope that a cop didn't catch them with the
goat. BTW, cattle rusting was a hanging offense, what's the penalty for
"goat rustling" in Davie? Was I being unreasonable when I asked them to be
*very* careful that there were no cops around anymore and take the goat
back? Well, since they really are good kids - no really they are (hah), no
seriously they are, why are you laughing? - they took the goat back, dumped
it back over the fence and watched it scamper off. And of course being the good
kids that they are, when I asked them to pose for a picture of course they had
to do as I asked. (I figured everyone would think I was making this whole
thing up, plus I like to have blackmail material.) Never a dull
moment around this zoo! :)

Wow! It's been a busy couple of months. Nick's JV team did
fairly well. Derek's varsity team had an overall great season: 21-7, won first
place in a tournament in Naples, but alas they didn't do too well in
district playoffs. Nick was inducted into the National Honor
Society. Derek had a bunch of award ceremonies, grad night, prom,
orientation at UF, and graduation.
Click
here for a list of all the awards
he received. Remember to check out the picture album.
:)
What's going on this summer? Well... Derek will be studying (at
least he better be), Denise will be working (borrrrring) and Jerry will be
teaching Nick how to play poker. Wait a minute what's wrong with this
picture??????

So... what did I get for Mother's Day? The
whole family together, in one place, smiling for the camera.
Best present ever. :) (Click on the image for a bigger

Jan 23, 2003
Nick made the JV baseball team & Derek made Varsity.
Guess that means we should just set up a tent at the high school baseball field
since that's were we'll be very night this spring.
Jan 10, 2003
Nick just got his driver's license and our insurance payments
now looks more like a mortage payment.:)
Dec 11, 2002
Derek just got his acceptance letter to the University
of Florida! Guess we're "Gator" fans now.
We also got him a new (used) car, a Lexus GS300. If
he ever stays home for more than a couple of minutes, I'll try to get a picture.
:) The puppy is fully loaded with sunroof, spoiler and CD changer.
Needless to say he's in love with his new "toy".
Nov 17, 2002
Derek's football team made it to the playoffs, but unfortunately
they lost Friday night.
It was still a great season with an 8-2 record. Oh
well, on to baseball. :)
Nov 11, 2002
I lost the last website I made, so I've had to start from
scratch. Anyways, the boys are
doing great. Derek is still
playing football and Nick is playing fall baseball.
Jerry's still
driving a school bus and loving every minute and I've been playing with this
website. :)
