d: 12/11/06 Baldy had been having mild neuroligical problems for a year, he didn't always know where his feet were. On Sunday 12/10 his problems became acute and he was unable to stand. Fortunately he was being boarded at my vets, where they took superb care of him...but when I saw him on Monday it was clear he had given up. Baldy was a fighter and when I saw he had no fight left I allowed them to put him down as the kindest thing we could do. He would have been 14 in January.

FLASH! Baldy is now a DAD! His puppies were born 10/25/2004

Baldy x Cheers (Comet's Last Call of O'Run, FCh)
Baldy finished his ASFA FCh.on 10/22/94 and his LCM on 3/16/96, with four 1st placements and one Best in Field. He is now working for his LCM2 and has one Best of Breed.

I wasn't really planning on getting Baldy's AKC FCh. - just running in local trials to support the clubs, until he went Best of Breed at the MAWA trial in Oct. 1995 - for a 5 point major!

6/1/96 - Baldy has had a run of bad luck this spring! At the MAWA AKC lure trial in Perry, GA in April 1996 he cut a hind foot on his first run and had to be pulled, and (darn it!) there were 5 point majors both days. Then at the SHOT trials in VA in May 1996 Baldy cut another foot. This time it was a front foot and a much worse cut, but thanks to Larry & Donna Richards' help it healed fine and he was soon able to run again - only to have MORE bad luck. At the Memorial Day Trial held by MDIHC in Hanover, PA Baldy never made it to the second turn of his *first* run of the weekend. He got tangled (somehow!) in the line and nicked a blood vessel. Thanks to the lure operator (who saw it happen and stopped the course) it wasn't nearly as bad as it looked. It bled a lot and the vet had to put in four stitches. Baldy couldn't run at all the rest of the weekend, but he has healed just fine and is ready to run again.

6/7/96 - Baldy is now an Uncle! His older sister Yo was bred to Slick and had 9 puppies. Two of them have come to live here: Bandit and Rowdy.

7/6/96 - yesterday we attended the AMUCK Nighthound Lure Trial. It was a very interesting experience. Roll call was at 7 pm and the running was conducted under lights. Baldy ran fine, even though he had a skinned place on one foot (more foot trouble!) but with taping and a little padding he was fine. He got second in a full stake, and as much as I would have liked to see him get a first I was actually glad he didn't because two runs were more than enough for his foot. We finally left the field at 2 am - a strange time to be leaving a field trial! (See Edsel's, Copper's, and Slick's pages for more about the trial)

7/23/96 - This is getting scary! I just got Baldy back from the vet - again! Somehow or other he managed to open a 2 inch x 4 inch tear in the skin over his ribs. He's got about a six inch stitched incision. Here's hoping he can survive this run of bad luck he's been having!

8/5/96 - This has been a BAD summer for poor Baldy! 2 weeks after he cut his chest I took out his stitches - he was healing very well, no soreness or infections. The following Sunday he came in with his left front leg laid open! The cut went almost 2/3 of the way around the upper part of his leg and was about an inch wide. *Another* skin tear. This one meant a trip to the emergency clinic. Not only was his leg opened, but he had pockets above and below the tear. The poor boy came home with 15 stitches and a drain, his leg held up by a bandage around his neck to take the strain off the stitches, and an Elizabethan collar. He was in a major snit about that collar!

He needed watching and nursing that I couldn't give him because I work so far from home - so I took him to my vet for nursing/boarding. He stayed there 8 days - until they could take out the stitches and the drain. He had lost a LOT of weight. They said he ate like a horse, but he was so fit I think the weight drop was mostly from the inactivity. I took him straight to Tom Dickey to board until I can get my yard safe for him to live in again - I'm afraid to bring him home!

9/29/96 - Baldy's BACK HOME!  Yay!  He stayed at Tom's for a month and has gained back all the weight he lost.  I knew he was beginning to feel better when Tom called and said he'd been trying to break out of his crate! He finally got where he was barking at night and I couldn't allow him to be a nuisance so I brought him home.  I *think* I've fixed the places where he might have been getting hurt - here's hoping!  Needless to say, I check him very carefully every day.

10/7/96 - got back last night from the GOGLCA ASFA lure trial.  Baldy ran both days.  He didn't get any placements, but he didn't get hurt either!  YAY!

11/30/96 - FLASH!! At the MAWA AKC lure trial on Nov 30 Baldy went FIRST in Open over 22 other Whippets for *another* FIVE point major!  Yay Baldy!  Only 5 more to go and he'll be an AKC as well as an ASFA Field Ch.

4/97 - the AWC National Specialty lure trial was HUGE!  3 full stakes of Open, *7* full stakes of Field Champions AND *2* full stakes of Veterans!  And Baldy got 2nd in his stake!

9/13/97 - Baldy passed the ATTS Temperament Test today and now has the TT to add to his name

4/12/98 - at the WRA race meet in Perry, Ga Baldy was awarded the "Most Improved Racer" award by Karen Lee - a lovely harness brass of a Whippet head

5/1 - at the NOTRA meet in Ohio, Baldy placed in the Top Ten! He was 8th in the meet.

5/9 - Baldy finished his Companion Racer title at the WRA races in VA
