The main purpose of the ConchNews website is to provide a comprehensive bibliography of scientific literature pertinent to the study of the gastropod Family Strombidae. I hope it serves as a useful tool for identifying relevant work that contributes to the success of future research and conservation efforts. The bibliography includes all citations referenced in Darcy's annotated Strombus bibliography (1981; a total of 126), and all citations referenced in Acosta's indexed Strombus bibliography (1994; a total of 437) with the exception of two manuscripts cited as being "in press." The Acosta work includes papers published from 1829 to 1992. Since then scientists have focused largely upon strombid ecology, including such topics as juvenile and adult distribution, population structure, aggregation dynamics, predator-prey interactions, survivorship, seagrass relationships, trophic biology, behavior, stock enhancement, reproduction, shell morphology, larval supply, larval transport and distribution, metamorphosis and settlement, larval development and nutrition, and genetics. Extensive work in mariculture has continued, and the current status of fisheries resources are regularly reported. Research productivity increased greatly during the 1990s, and over 30% of the literature included herein has been published since the beginning of 1992.
The ConchNews bibliography contains more than 1000 citations. It includes papers on other genera of Family Strombidae besides Strombus, though the vast majority of papers are pertinent to Strombus, particularly Strombus gigas, the queen conch. It also includes some paleontological and archaeological references. In addition to personal collections, the main sources for reference are the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts and Oceanic Abstracts databases. English translations are given for many non-English titles.
