COTTRELL
My mother was a COTTRELL: Maude Hazel COTTRELL (called Hazel). She was born in 1918 in Hart County KY near Cub Run. Her parents were Harold Francis Cottrell and Effie Jaggers.
By the time Hazel was born the Cottrell (earlier spelled Cotterell) family had lived in Hart Co or its parent county, Hardin, for over a hundred years. This Hart Co residency started during the first decade of the 1800's when three Cottrell brothers, Henry, Joshua and John, and an older woman, Sarah, apparently their mother, moved from Chester Co SC. They settled in the Dog Creek area in the Southwest part of the county. The father of these brothers was named Henry according to SC records: I call the father Henry I. There was another brother, Nathan, who did not move to KY with them. Henry I appears in several public records in Chester Co SC including deeds in 1800 in which he gives his land and personal property to his four sons mentioned above. He apparently died before the move to KY.
Of the three brothers who moved to KY, only Henry (I call him Henry II) remained in Hart Co. John moved to IL and is of record in Richland Co. Joshua's eventual whereabouts is a mystery. Hazel was a descendant of Henry II by way of his son Henry (I call him Henry III). Henry III's son William was her grandfather. Her father was Harold Francis Cottrell, son of William.
