Descendants of William Johnstone

Generation No. 1

1. SIR WILLIAM1 JOHNSTONE was born in "of the Johnstone Clan", Scotland. He married HONOR KILLINGSWORTH in St. Mary's, Florida. She was born 1728 in Ireland.

Notes for SIR WILLIAM JOHNSTONE: (from Robert Johnston)

"Sir William Johnstone of the Johnstone Clan, with his family took part with Charles Stuart in his attempt to gain the throne of Scotland in 1745. After the fall of Charles Stuart, he immigrated to the United States settling at St. Mary's Florida where he married Honor Killingsworth, an Irish noblewoman, by whom he had six sons. John Johnston, one of his younger sons, born about 1765, was married to Joyce Powell of Georgia, then moved to Pensacola Florida until four sons were born. Joseph Johnston was the youngest and born in 1791. From Pensacola, John Johnston moved to McIntosh Bluff in the Territory of Mississippi, where Joseph Johnston married Clara Cato, daughter of Sterling Cato and Abigail Brewer Cato, said Abigail being descended from the Cromwell family of England."

I am descended from John Johnston b. abt 1750 and Joyce Powell. John and Joyce lived in what later became Washington/Baldwin County, Alabama after about 1800. It is rumored in the family that his father was William Johnston ("Sir"?) and mother was Honor Killingsworth. None of the researchers of this line that I know of has come up with anything definative on this however. I speculate that William may have arrived in Savannah, Charleston, South Carolina, or St. Mary's Georgia as a refugee from the Jacobite rebellion. I believe that John was probably born in the future U.S. I also suspect that the Johnston's were loyalists and, therefore, lost their property after the revolution. The moved with many other loyalists, including John Linder, to Spanish territory near Mobile, Alabama thereafter. I know John Linder had property on the Great Pee Dee and his daughter Elizabeth (my anscestor via marriage to Daniel Johnston) was born in Charleston. Is there anyone out there that could shed some light on 1) John's parents and lineage back to Scotland (or Ireland) and 2) whether Honor Killingsworth existed and was our ancestor. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated and I would be willing to share what meager descendent information I have in return. Thanks.

The term anabaptist was used to describe and define certain Christians during the Reformation.

These Christians rejected infant baptism, choosing instead believer's baptism.

Since many of them had been baptized in their infancy, they chose to be rebaptized as believing adults.

So their enemies called them anabaptists -- "re-baptizers."

Transcriber's Notes:

1. This census had only six pages numbered by the enumerator. I assigned

page numbers for clarity. Page numbers are: 918, nn 1 through nn 12,

943, 945, 947, 949, 951.

2. By every slave (regardless of age) whose color was marked with ‘M’

for mulatto the enumerator checked column 6. This appears to be a count

of mulattos and not of slaves who are fugitives from the state.

Notes for EMMETT REEVES VAUGHAN:

Thirty-Second Alabama

Infantry Regiment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This regiment was organized at Mobile, in April 1862, and three months later proceeded to Tennessee. It was first under fire at Bridgeport, where it forded the Tennessee in the face of the enemy. Shortly after, the regiment captured Stevenson, with valuable stores. It operated in the middle of Tennessee, part of the time under Gen. Forrest, and was surprised and overpowered at Lavergne, losing a number of prisoners. Placed in Gen. D.W. Adams' brigade, the Thirty-second fought with severe loss at Murfreesboro. Having wintered at Tullahoma, the regiment was part of the force sent to Mississippi to the relief of Vicksburg. It was in the trenches at Jackson, and, without loss, repulsed an assault in the enemy, 260 of whose dead were counted and buried in front of its position. Two or three months later, the Thirty-second rejoined the Army of Tennessee, and participated in the battle of Chicamauga with small loss. It was then transferred from Adams' brigade to that of Gen. Clayton of Barbour, and consolidated with the Fifty-eighth Alabama, where its further record will be found.
