Classical guitarist and Mississippi native Michael Boyd received his Doctor of
Musical Arts Degree in Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Southern
Mississippi under the tutelage of Giovanni
DeChiaro. During his studies at USM,
Michael garnered top honors and awards at numerous festivals and competitions,
including the 1996 Mississippi Conference of the National Federation of Music
Clubs, as well as the 1997 Mississippi Music Teachers Association Convention,
where he was subsequently chosen to represent Mississippi in a performance at the Music
Teachers National Association Regional Convention in Tallahassee, Florida. Mr. Boyd has attended master classes with
many renowned artists including Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Leo Brouwer, Christopher
Parkening, Randy Pile, Marc Regnier, and The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.
As a performer
and clinician, Michael maintains an active schedule in the region and abroad,
including appearances with the University
of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra,
Sinfonia Gulf Coast,
as well as performances in Argentina
and Spain. He served as Assistant Director of USM’s
Summer Guitar Institute in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001, as Co-Director to the
2001 Majesty of the Guitar in Spain International Festival and the Southern
Arts Guitar Festival in 2003, both held on the campus of the University of Southern
Mississippi.
Mr. Boyd is a member of the Mississippi Humanities Council Speakers
Bureau, the Mississippi Arts Commission, and Southern Artistry, organizations
dedicated to promoting arts and education programs in communities throughout
the southeast. As an educator, Michael
has held positions at Southwest
Mississippi Community
College, Belhaven College,
the University of
Southern Mississippi and
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Hattiesburg,
Mississippi. Presently he serves as Director of Music at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hattiesburg,
and as Professor of Music at Jones
Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi,
where he has been awarded such honors as Humanities Teacher of the Year,
Lamplighter, and Who’s Who among Professional Educators.
In 2006, Michael made his New York debut at
prestigious Carnegie Hall with The Mississippi Guitar Quartet under the
auspices of Centaur Records. He has been
featured on National Public Radio affiliate programs such as WRTI’s
‘Crossover’, MPB’s ‘Mississippi Concert Hall’ as well as WMSV’s ‘High Notes’. Mr. Boyd also performs with fellow quartet
member Steven Kennedy as the Mangore Duo, and in addition to his work with
Centaur Records, Michael is featured as concertmaster on the Southern Arts
Guitar Consort recording ‘Reflections’, and has also released several acclaimed
solo recordings through the Lucid Records label. He also performed on the Albany Records recording
of Samuel Adler’s oratorio ‘Choose Life’, and was involved with its’ premier at
Lincoln Center’s Avery Fischer Hall.
Michael has been contributing author to articles in Mel Bay’s
‘Teaching Guitar’, and The Guitar Foundation of America’s journal
‘Soundboard’. He studied composition
with Luigi Zaninelli and Dr. John Donohue, and in addition to composing,
Michael transcribes and arranges works for guitar and other mediums. Mr. Boyd’s recordings and transcriptions by
Mel Bay Publications are available though major online outlets, with more to be
available soon.
Mr. Boyd performs on guitars made by luthiers Abel Garcia
and Tom Blackshear, lute by Günter Denzel, and strings by Galli
