George, my Dad, was born at 40 Willow Place in Brooklyn, NY. He grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. As an adult he became a successful electrical contractor. As far back as I can remember, George was loved by everyone. He was a good and kind man who touched the heart of anyone who knew him. He always had a warm smile that radiated with love. George met my mother Gloria through her brother Joe. They met and fell in love. George and Gloria eloped. They lived for two years with her parents, Badie and Angelle and had two boys, George [me] and Floyd. George and Gloria then moved to 10th Street and 6th Avenue in Park Slope, where they had another two boys, Kenneth and Dennis. Four years latter they moved to 72nd Street in Brooklyn where they had two girls, Anita and Carol and raised their six children. He went to school at PS 176 on 69th St. and 12th Ave. Many years later, Gloria would meet a woman at a party after George died who told Gloria that she remembered Dad from grammar school. She described him as "the handsomest boy in the school". She went on to say that he was "smart, nice and a little gentleman". When I was in the first grade in Park Slope, my principal sent a note home with me that inquired if I were related to George Alwon. He was my Dad's teacher who said he always remembered George as an outstanding person. In high school, Gloria recalls that George made up cross word puzzles in Latin for the school newspaper. He was never accepted for military duty during World War II because of a medical problem - he had two webbed toes! He also had an epiletic problem and took dilantin for many years. He began his electrical business by chance. Since he didn't enter the Army as he wanted to, he had to find work. His father Nick had a friend Jake Booze. Jake worked in the ship yards around 53rd St Bay Ridge. They were the Bush Shipyards. Latter the area would be known as Bush Terminal. Jake took a liking to George and got him a job with the ship yards as an electrician's helper. George learned fast. His career began here. Forty years later, his career ended a few blocks from where it began. While at the shipyard, Dad earned some extra money by selling raffle tickets on his pay check. He sold chances for $1.00 each. After the War, he got his next job with an electrical contractor who was Jewish. Throughout his business life, the Jewish people were his best supporters and encouragers...except for this one. George had to go to jobs by subway or if he had too much to carry, by cab. This contractor didn't pay Dad for Christmas nor for the Jewish holidays. He quit. Dad worked for another contractor and was soon laid off. During his next job, he began studying for his electrical license. He took a night class at a trade school. Gloria said the $50 fee was a major concern to them at that time. He got fired from this job when the license board asked his boss for a reference. They fired him because they did not know he was trying to get his license. He learned a lesson from this experience. For the rest of his life, he encouraged and supported his employees when they tried to get their own electrical licenses. George took to the streets to find work. But first, he needed to have an office or a sign in a window that indicated that he was licensed. He walked the streets around the lower 20's in Manhattan. On 23rd St he met Jimmy Pasquale, "Jimmy the Plumber". Jimmy said he would talk to his boss Donald Smoke. Donald rented George a desk and a place to put his sign. Alwon Electric Company began! His second son Floyd was born when George printed his business cards and again walked the streets handing them out. His first customer was Arrow Dye. Arrow Dye was a small dye house that grew into a multi million dollar business. They remained faithful and committed to Alwon Electric throughout their growth. They wanted George because of the quality of his work and his honesty. They trusted him. Trust, being a nice guy, and work quality were the words more frequently heard about George and his business. He cared for his customers and his employees even when they took advantage of him. One of his associates, Marty Bleich, offered to pay all of Dad's bills when he fell at work and ended up in the hospital. Marty was one of Dad's many Jewish friends. Walter Whitelaw began his career with Dad. He learned the trade from George. He then helped him get started in his own business. Whitelaw Electric grew to be a large and successful firm. Dad touched many people. Mom met a man in 1993 who heard of Dad's work thirty years ago but never met him. He was glad to meet Gloria and tell her about the wonderful things he knew about a man he never met. Dad frequently drove Johnny Ryan, one of our 72nd St. neighbors, to the fire house where he worked. One day, Johnny forgot his lunch in Dad's truck. Johnny claims that Dad drove back from Manhattan to give John his lunch. He had a host of characters working for him including yours truly. What he let me get away with only a father would do. Sidney Blacken never came to work until after 5 pm. He was a very unique man who had no regard for conventional behavior. George Richards, a Caribbean Black man worked with us. He was a hard worker and a role model. Then there was Don, Jimmy Cronin, and others I don't remember. My brother Floyd, Kenny and Dennis, my uncles Floyd and Butch, and my cousin Bruce all earned extra money with Alwon Electric. Butch recalls the Electrical Contractor Conventions at the Hotel Concord in the Catskills. Gloria & George, Floyd & Florence, and Butch & Peggy had some wild times at these conventions. Bernardo Contreras was a friend from Mexico that George brought into his business. Bernardo, like Dad, learned the trade and the business. When Dad died, Bernardo took over the business and keeps it going successfully today. Mom remembers Dad telling her that every week we should try and do 5 minutes of good deeds for someone. That's how I remember him...always doing good for others. George was born at Brooklyn, NY, on 31 December 1921. He was the son of Nicholas Norman Alwon and Matiele (Matilda) Zrake. He married Gloria Mary Katen at Bethany Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, NY, on 27 March 1943. Initially, Mom and Pop got married here on the day they eloped. Gloria's marriage to George was not well taken by her family. Her dad, Badie thought that George was a Muslim and poor. Badie didn't want them to marry. After the marriage, they eloped to Worcester and stayed with Jeannette and George Solomon. They escorted them to White City and held a party for the newly weds at their home. Jeannette recalls Mom calling her mother Angelle. Angelle was happy with the marriage. We guess that Angelle made things smooth at home because shortly afterwards, George and Gloria moved in with her parents and that is where I was born. Gloria loved her husband, her children and her grandchildren a lot. They came before all else. As a tribute to her, the grandchildren often write wonderful letters and poems to her. On Feb. 6, 1945, she awoke sometime before midnight and went to the bathroom. At that time, sewers were under repair or construction on 79th Street. So, when she went to the bathroom, she saw a rat. She screamed! My father, granddparents, uncles Butch and Teddy came running. The rat, running down the stairs so it could get out, passed Teddy. The comotion and screaming must have made me decide to come out. [I guess that is twice in my life that I came out]. I was now on the way to the hospital. When Kenny was born, Dad and Aunt Lady were at the movies, Jido and Taita were visiting the Jebailey's. We were living on 10th Street at the time, but Mom wanted to be near the hospital. So, she and the family stayed at the Katen's on 79th Street. In the early evening, Uncle Butch comes home. Remember, that he is a teenager at this time. He notices that Gloria is going to the bathroom a lot. He tells Gloria that maybe they should go to the hospital. But neither he nor she can drive. So, Gloria calls for her parents at the Jebailey's. Ms. Jebailey had a few drinks and brushed Gloria off, telling her not to worry. Taita later asked Ms. Jebailey who called and again she said not to worry. Taita did! She got Jido and Mr. Jebailey to go straight home and drive Gloria to the hospital. And so, Kenny was born with no fuss and no pain. Jido was concerned that no one even yelled 'Ya-Allah!" Little did he know that they'd have plenty of time to do so later. Kenneth was born at Brooklyn, NY, on 19 February 1949. He is the son of George Nicholas Alwon and Gloria Mary Katen. Anita Marie Alwon was ill with cancer; In 1996, Anita developed lung cancer. She smoked for 30 years and worked in a bar on weekends further exposing her to smoke.
Anita was struck with lung cancer in October 1996. She smoked cigarettes until 1992. When Anita was born, Dad and Gloria were sleeping. Suddenly, Gloria felt that the bed was wet and got mad at Dad. She then decided to get a towel for him. She realized that it was her, not him, who was wet. She went to the bathroom a few times. Taita Alwon, who lived upstairs, heard Gloria flushing the toilet many times and come down to see if she was alright. Taita said that "Your water must have broken" and told her to call the doctor. She did. He said "Get to the hospital now!" Gloria decided not to wake Dad because he worked late that night. Meanwhile, Jido Nick was coming home from working the night shift. Nick drove Gloria to the hospital. Taita and Jido went to bed without waking Dad. In the early moringing, Dr Koota called Dad and woke him up. He said "You have a beautiful baby girl." Dad said "What do you mean? Where is Gloria?" He didn't know that Mom was already at the hospital. He ran off to the hopital. They were kind and let him in to see Gloria and Anita. Anita was a fun loving woman who had an excitement for life. She loved skiing, shopping, and being with family and friends. She went to Fontbonne High School for a year. She never really liked it and transferred to New Utrecht where our Dad went to high school. She often talked about walking the same hallways as he did. At age 19, she moved to Gloversville for one year. She returned home and lived with her mother for several years. After her mother started dating George Lewis, Anita got her own apartment in Far Rockaway, NY. Her place was tastefully decorated and had an wonderful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Anita loved the water, the sun and the sea. She frequently visited family whenever she could. Her Uncle Butch Katen and his wife Peggy lived near Antia. They were like her second family. She worked as a Senior Police Administrative Aide with the NYPD from September 9, 1995 until her death. She was devoted to the NYC Police Department and was one of their finest civilian employees. In a rare show of support for a civilian employee, several hundred of New York's Finest came to pay tribute to Anita. The policemen and women organized the benefit for her. Unfortunately, Anita passed away the night before the benefit. Anita stopped working on October 4, 1996. She went to Maimonides Hospital where they diagnosed her with lung cancer due to smoking. Upon her release, at the end of October, Anita came to my brother Dennis's home in Chapel Hill for treatment. Dennis, Marianne and their family took extraordinary of Anita while she was sick. Carol came from Colorado and spent months with her sister. David Bibb helped the family out even though Anita did not accept him fully. She began to accept him after George Lewis and Mom got together. Relatives and friends came from all over to be with her during and after her treatment. Mom, Dennis, Carol, Marianne, Georgia and I were with Anita at the very end. For Anita, her family and her friends gave her life meaning. She was very generous, kind and caring for those she loved. We will remember her always. Anita was born at Brooklyn, NY, on 26 January 1952. She was the daughter of George Nicholas Alwon and Gloria Mary Katen. Occupation: Senior Police Administrative Aid. Anita died on 19 March 1997 at Home of Dennis and Marianne, Chapel Hill, NC, at age 45. |

Badie Shakir Katen was ill with eye disorders; Macular degeneration.

After graduating High School in Homs, in 1913, Badie immigrated to Brooklyn. He immediately opened a grocery store in Manhattan. Later he added a restaurant to it. He operated both until 1920. He served in the United States Army in Camp Gordon near Atlanta, GA. He started in officer training school when the World War 1 was ending. In early 1921, he then went to Shanghai and Swatu, China to export embroidery, linens and laces to New York. His brothers, Bahig and Niazi followed him and ran the business from China. He stayed in China a total of 22 months. He returned to Brooklyn in Dec, 1922 to marry Angelle. They married in 1923. Badie was involved in importing and selling of goods until World War 2. He opened a quilting manufacturing business in 1949 which he ran until he retired. All three sons worked with him. Joseph left in the early 1950's. He turned the business over to his two sons, Butch and Floyd. Badie died on Jan 12, 1993 at 11:13 AM in Victory Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn. He was 96. Badie was born at Homs, Syria, on 24 July 1896. He was the son of Shakir Katen and Nabiaha Gorab. Badie immigrated, in 1913. Destination: Ellis Island, NY. He married Angelle Azar at Brooklyn, NY, on 21 April 1923. Badie died on 12 January 1993 at Brooklyn, NY, at age 96.1 His body was interred on 16 January 1993 at Brooklyn, NY, Greenwood.2 |

Rose immigrated to the United States on the White Star Passenger Lines in 1903. Rose had a sister who was a nun. Gloria recalls stories about Rose's sister serving as a companion for the Queen of Serbia after her husband, Ferdinand, was assassinated. Rose and her daughter lived in an apartment on the corner of 78th St and Ridge Blvd in Brooklyn. Prior to that, she lived with her husband Bishara in Worcester MA. Some remember Rose as a real tough woman. Mom remembers stories about Rose throwing out her grandson, Teddy, after his mother died. According to Nazir Katen, Badie heard that Bishara, Rose's husband, was in Worcester, Ma. He wanted to know why Bishara abandoned his family and moved away. Bishara told Badie that Rose was a "man hater" and that no person could live with her. Badie understood. Rose immigrated, in 1903. Destination: (an unknown value). After her husband left the family, she put her children in an orphanage for many years. During those years, she built a lingerie fashion business and travelled to Paris. She was sent to Paris by her client, a Mrs. Richards. Professionally she was well known. One of her specialties was hand-made torsoes for wealthy women. A brief article written in the New York Times about her intended trip to Paris to get the latest fashions. Once a month she would visit her children at the orphanage. Lorraine and Claire were at the Convent of Mercy on Willoughby Street in Brooklyn. John and Gladys were at another orphanage. Her children were very unhappy there. She married Hanna Farah. Victoria was born at Alexandria, Egypt, on 6 December 1886. She was the daughter of Bishara Azar and Rose Ojile. Victoria died on 21 August 1969 at Miami, FL, at age 82. |
