"Pagan" literally means "country dweller," although the term has been applied since early times to connote "heathen, unbeliever, or infidel." In general the Earth-based beliefs are naturalistic in both their origin and expression. Much of the stigma attached to them is the result of fabrications by "Christian" proselytizers over the course of centuries. Modern neopagans are still persecuted to the extent that it is unlikely that the law will recognize their practices as part of a "real" religion, at least not in the lower courts.
