Wicca often refers to the prevailing belief system in pre-Christian Britain, which would probably be better described as a philosophy than a religion. Wiccans were derided by Christian proselytizers as "witches," so the terms are synonymous according to this view.

Other sources insist that "Wicca" properly refers only to the neo-pagan rituals established by Gerald Gardner and his followers in the 1950s. Although it is probably the pagan equivalent of arguing about the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin, there is considerable earnest (if not necessarily serious) disagreement over the "real" meaning of Wicca®.
