Browse Amazon Books: History of the Christian Church & Sectarianism

It occurs to me that most people recieve some religious training in childhood and remain in the church they were brought up in. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It preserves family and friendship connections, and provides the church with a certain cross-fertilization of ideas.

On the other hand, most denominations split from existing churches because of some basic disagreement, doctrinal or otherwise. (Such as the Pope Paul III's famous refusal to grant Henry VIII a diviorce from Katherine of Aragon.)

Although churches tend to be inclusive, and their congregations far from doctrinally pure, the differences between Christian sects are still a fascinating study, whether one is considering conversion or not.
