Browse Amazon Books: Philosophy, History & Surveys

The word "philosophy" derives from the Greek philos (friendly) + sophia (wisdom), and refers to intellectual pursuits that are more easily recognized than described. Accordingly, introductory philosophy courses are primarily surveys of the history of philosophic thought, and the books in this section would be good supplementary reading for introductory philosophy classes (like "Ethics in America"), if not sufficient texts in themselves.

  • The Story of Philosophy

In this brief and accessible coffee-table book, Bryan Magee summarizes the highlights of the great philosophers from the Ancient Greeks through modern philosophers. While I haven't taken the "Ethics in America" exam, I couldn't help noticing that the subject matter of this book closely parallels the syllabus for that course.

  • The Great Philosophers: An Introduction to Western Philosophy

This is a great introductory philosophy book by the same author as The Story of Philosophy. It lacks the color illustrations, but covers many of the same topics in more depth, although it doesn't follow the "Ethics in America" syllabus as closely. Taken together, these two would constitute a pretty good review, and just qualify for Amazon's free "Super Saver" shipping.
