In the late '70s, everybody in my unit knew Uncle Sugar would be sending us all to Afghanistan soon, and all I could by find by way of orientation was Michener's Caravans. Afghanistan may not be the middle of nowhere, but you can definitely see it from there. Alexander came through, and Ghengis Khan, but otherwise everybody has pretty much left these people alone!
