The Roman Legions conquered ancient Greece, but Greek ideas transformed Rome in the image of Greece. The ancient Greeks excelled in art, architecture, literature, mathematics, and philosophy.
Greek mythology was divided into the age of gods, the age of gods and men, and the age of heroes which constitute a continuum of progressively less direct intervention by the gods in human affairs. While it is likely that the earliest Greeks believed in this mythology literally, it is probable that later Greek society regarded them as more allegorical. See also: Greek Mythology
