There is no recommended daily allowance for refined sugar or white flour. You simply don't need any of these "empty calories." However, even a little of these high glycemic index substances can trigger hyperinsulinism in susceptible individuals. Who is susceptible? Almost everybody.
Try this: Eliminate sugar and white flour from you diet completely for one day. (It's hard to do. If you read labels you will find these ingredients in almost everything. Sugar also goes by a number of aliases, like corn syrup, dextrose, sucrose, etc.) If you can't skip these items for one day without significant cravings, chances are you need to eliminate them from your diet altogether.
Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar is one of the most underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed ailments in America today. Glucose tolerance tests, if they are administered at all, really only detect relatively severe hypoglycemia. If you have a "sweet tooth," chances are you need to stop indulging it.
