I remember the AMA's "debunking" of acupuncture not that many years ago. They concluded that Chi (Ki, Qi) must be electricity, and since they couldn't detect any current in the "so-called meridians" acupuncture must therefore be so much hokum. Now they routinely use acupuncture in anesthesiology for patients who are allergic to opiates, for instance.

The Chinese -- much less resistant to "new" ideas -- blend traditional Chinese medicine with Western pharmaceuticals and surgery in their remarkably efficient heath-care delivery system.
