Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) PCs are easy to build and repair. The common phobia stems from the high cost of mistakes. Start with old abandoned computers, they are more than adequate for *NIX and they are cheap / free. after gaining a little experience & confidence, upgrading newer systems will be a snap.
