Notes from the February meeting

Our January and February meetings were combined into one gathering on February 2, 2008 because the library meeting room was not available to us on the regular 4th Saturdays in either January and February.

Sylvia Bern facilitated the meeting and drew the group into discussions concerning the dreaded visit to the dentist. One person reported her dentist required her to have a breathing test before he would do the work she needed. Pros and cons of calcium were discussed and also Odd Shoe Finder which was mentioned in the January 2008 PPSG newsletter.

Notes from the March meeting

Our March meeting was a time of sharing "Do's and Don'ts" for Polio survivors.  We reviewed several newsletters from various sources that publish Post-Polio info.  Of particular concern was medications.  New ones are always on the market and we need to know how they affect muscle or interact with other drugs . We must also be careful about side effects.  Talk to your doctor!

Clara Norsworthy showed us her cane tip (Tornado) and provided order info.  She likes this tip because it swivels when you move.  Sometimes we neglect to change our cane tips when we should-BEFORE THEY GET SMOOTH!  A smooth tip will not grip as it should  and can make us fall.

Sadly the group will not make it to camp this year, not enough people.  We've had a lot of surgery and illness.  Maybe next year.

Our Goodwill Easter Seals lady is leaving with her husband for China.  He has a job there.  We'll get a new person soon.  Thank you Cyndi Thompson for all your help. The group was asked to keep an eye open for places that are "accessible" where we can have an outing.  Our next meeting will be facilitated by Patsy Adams because I will be leaving on a cruise  with my high school 55th  Reunion.  Wish me well.  Love to all.  Sylvia

What have you found that makes life easier for you?

Patsy Adams asks that you be thinking and bring to the April 26th meeting the object, the thought, the experience, or whatever you have found which makes life easier for you. It may be pertaining to after effects of polio or life in general.

Some suggestions to put you to thinking:

  • I talk it out. I find a sympathetic listener and discuss my concerns.
  • I enjoy a friend's garden in photography. I can almost smell the roses.
  • I use the mobility carts in the grocery stores, saves my crutch tips

Notes from the February meeting

A beautiful day brought twelve people to our February 16, 2008 meeting. We welcomed newcomer, Chereyl Cooper, a friend of Theresa Inge, who had lots of questions and concerns. We hope we left sufficient questions unanswered so that she will be back with us each month.

Speedy recoveries were wished Wayne Baggett and Pat De Lorme. Several of our group were anticipating appointments with Dr. Peach in the next few months. A search is on to find a local pool staffed with therapists with some knowledge of working with polio survivors.

Notes from the March meeting

Sixteen people attended our March 15, 2008 meeting. We spent some time regretting that we could not get the required twenty people necessary to have a post-polio Camp ASCCA weekend this year. We talked about how much fun the past camping experiences had been. Oh well, having the memories is better than not having had the experiences at all. We discussed possibly having a day event locally in lieu of camping this year. Possibly combining with the Mobile group again as we did in October. Jim and Shirley Neil offered their home and would work with Sylvia Bern to see what could be arranged with the Mobile people. We’ll let you know when the date and time has been set.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday, April 19, 2008, for our regular 3rd Saturday of the month meeting.
