WOW! The response to Woody’s request for our military serving in Iraq was overwhelming! We shipped half of the goodies on September 27th. The shipping cost was $30.00. Thanks to you who gave money to pay shipping and to those of you who provided a wide variety of salty, sweet, chips, nuts, and even chewing gum. Marshall’s Thank You! All the packages have been great. In fact, we are now so well stocked that we are asking folks to hold off for a while! I do appreciate what you have done, as each item has been chosen to serve a purpose, which makes everything extremely useful. In other words, good job! We have another shipment ready to go but will wait until the end of October to ship these. We hope this shipment will take the soldiers through the Christmas Holidays. |

PENSACOLA POST-POLIO SUPPORT GROUP meets the 3rd Saturday every month at 10 am Baptist Towers 1717 North E and Avery Streets, Pensacola, Florida |
Notes from the September meeting....Vera Moore reporting Sylvia Bern welcomed all to the concession area which served as a substitute meeting room at the West Regional Branch of the Mobile Public Library. An official library event was being held in the main, our usual, meeting room. Sylvia reported that on September 7th, she and Tommy Hollingsworth attended a meeting of the Mobile Vocational Rehabilitation Consumer Advisory Council meeting held in Mobile, at the Independent Living center. The meeting was conducted by Mr. Graham Simpson, Assistant Attorney General of the Sate of Alabama. Mr. Simpson, who uses a wheelchair, is the State Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator. The purpose of this gathering was to inform people with disabilities about available services and to gather information concerning their needs. Present were Alabama Department of Rehabilitation, Social Security, People for People, Independent Living Services and us, MAPPSG! Paula Rutherford is an advocate who works with Social Security and encouraged those who are working or about to retire on disability to see her first. She can explain regulations and help people work out a plan suitable for them. Judy Knight represents People to People and is trying to get various support groups to work together on matters that concern us all. Mr. Simpson went over the Legislative Agenda for the Alabama Disabilities Commission. He spoke about Money Follows the Person Act which will be introduced again in the spring of 2007. He is available to help us whenever we run into a problem concerning a disability. This meeting was very informative and I hope to attend the next one.

It was good to hear that Tommy is doing OK. Staying busy and is not mad at us. Just other things keeping him from attending our meetings. We welcomed a visiting delegation from Bishop State Community College; Melissa Bryant, Kathryn Pulliam and Bonita Woodard. The three are physical therapy assistant students of our own Pam Wehner, who had assigned her class to visit various support groups. We eagerly responded to their questions and were delighted to see our replies worthy of being recorded in their notes. Ed Weller told of his being able particularly to relate to the individual needs of student’s handicapping conditions. As a employee of Mobile County School System, Ed sees each student faces unique problems in accessibility. Recently he was able to reconstruct wash basins to better accommodate those without handicapping conditions as well as those of us who know the difficulties of hygiene in poorly arranged wash bacins. Ed received a round of applause for being able to see and solve difficult situations. Vera thanked everyone for the chips, cookies, crackers, etc. to be used in our project of remembering our service personnel in Iraq. A card was signed by all to be enclosed in the package.

Notes from the September meeting.... Clara Norsworthy reporting We had a beautiful day for our September 16, 2006 meeting. Twelve people turned out and we spent some time remember it was on this date two year ago when Hurricane Ivan came to Pensacola. Three of our usual faithful people are ill. We send speedy recovery messages to Pat, Leigh, and Gail. There was discussion on some new health aids that would help us to save our energy. These are found on the Internet at http://www.aarp.org/bulletin/ Several asked if others were experiencing numbness in their feet. Some reported this numbness had caused them to suffer falls. Jim and Shirley Neil had just returned from a motor trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they attended the National Motor Home Convention. While in the area they also went to Ashville, North Carolina to see Biltmore Estates. Jim and Shirley say it is well worth the trip and is accessible to those with handicapping conditions. The discussions are always enlightening and helpful. We are grateful for those who faithfully attend meeting and for those who keep in touch by phone and email when they are unable to attend. Next Meeting – Saturday, October 21, 2006
