The Gift
By Nelson Olinger

A long time ago when the time was just right;
a child was born into the night.
A manger was his, no room at the inn;
to the world he came and entered therein.

In a field nearby were men and their sheep;
the men were silent, as a watch they did keep.
A star in the sky filled them with fear;
and angels proclaimed that the Saviour, Jesus was here.

They went in haste to see this boy child;
the son of a King, lowly, meek and mild.
Praises and glory to God they did lift;
unaware that this child was a gift.

With wisdom, grace and strength he did grow;
no fault in him was found; no sin did he know.
He grew to a man and a carpenter by trade;
then his apron and tools to the side he laid.

He walked a new life, with twelve others he trod;
through the whole country, talking and teaching ‘bout God.
He healed as he went and spoke of God’s love;
and how that it was he was sent from above.

The chief priests and elders liked not what they saw;
he spoke against them and was opposed to their law.
They arrested and tried him for all to see;
then they nailed God’s gift up on a tree.

On the third day, when his followers went to the tomb
they found the stone rolled away and a cold empty room.
He is not here, the angel did say;
He is alive, he is risen this day.

In the upper room, they hid in fear;
Peace, said Jesus, as to them he drew near.
Forty days later the twelve stood in a crowd;
as God’s precious gift withdrew in a cloud.

This true Christmas story as well you can see
is not about Santa, lights or a tree.
It’s about eternal life and how provisions were made;
that for you and for me, this gift God gave.

The time now has come, there is something to do;
accept or reject it; which will you choose?
Now be quite and listen, what is that sound?
Is the door of your heart beginning to pound?

Jesus is knocking and wants to come in;
to clean you all up and free you from sin.
Believe in your heart that Jesus died for you;
Confess with your mouth and you will be made new.

Anything else is rejection you see;
its one or the other, there is no between.
The choice is now yours, so make it well;
Eternity in Heaven or Eternity in Hell?
