     Joseph Wing lived in 1803; went from New Bedford to Stanford, Dutchess County.12 He was employed as was a miller and flour merchant.12 He appeared on the census of 1850; age 62 (?), miller, with daughter Hannah and granddaughter Hannah A. (should be Amelia H.); born Massachusetts, value of property $3000. Joseph's house number is 30, sons John and James live in 31 and 32, Oliver lives in 17.13 "when he was but seventeen years of age he went as supercargo on one of William Roach's ships to Russia, and refused to remove his hat from his head in the presence of the czar, and was permitted to retain it when his reasons as a Quaker were explained."12

     Joseph Wing was born on 29 May 1716 at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA.1 He was the son of Joseph Wing and Dorothy Butler. Joseph Wing married Phebe Hatch, daughter of James Hatch and Anna Spooner, on 26 October 1752.1,2 Joseph Wing married Mary Goddard on 4 October 1766.1 Joseph Wing died in 1774 at Falmouth, Barnstable Co., MA.1
     Joseph Wing prepared a will on 31 January 1775; it is on record in Barnstable Court, dated 12th month, 1774. "His wife, Mary, was his executor and he mentions his sons, Joseph and James. His real estate inventoried at 800 [pounds], and his personal property at 114, 17s, 9d."1 Joseph "was one of the selectimen appointed by King George III to conduct the public affairs of the town of New Bedford. His commission, having the coat of arms of England and the seal and signature of the king, is still in the possession of a descendant..."3

Joseph Wing married Dorothy Butler, daughter of Daniel Butler and Elizabeth (?), on 3 November 1710.1 Joseph Wing died on 22 December 1715 at age 28; "Dr. Wing states that Joseph lived on the paternal estates in Rochester, but he seems to have owned lands of his own at the time of his death which were subsequently divided among his heirs. He died ... five years after his marriage, and in his 29th year, leaving a widow and three children -- one of whom was born five months after his death. His widow, Dorothy, was appointed adminstratrix of his estate by the Plymouth court, Dec. 22, 1715. After remaining the widow of Joseph ... In September [of 1740] she united with her second husband, Jashub [Wing], in giving a deed of lands in Rochester of Joseph Wing, 'former husband of said Dorothy and father of William, Joseph, and Elizabeth' to the three children named."1
