Jan* Jansen Van Amersfoort married Catryn Matthyssen van Ceulen, daughter of Matthys* Jansen Van Ceulen and Margriet* Hendrickse, on 3 October 1660 at Kingston, Ulster Co., NY; this was the first record entered into the books of the newly opened Dutch Reformed Church of Kingston.1 Jan* Jansen Van Amersfoort died circa 1678 at Kingston, Ulster Co., NY.2
     Jan* Jansen Van Amersfoort was employed as city carpenter and listed as a "Freeman and a Bachelor" on 15 May 1657 at New Amsterdam. Was a member of the Dutch Militia and fought with Stuyvesant in the Indian wars in 1660. "Van Amersfoort had a violent temper. As a result, he spent much time in court and jail. In 1668, he was exiled from the colony for physically and verbally abusing his wife and mother-in-law. Although no direct explanation has been found, it is believed that this is the reason that all of his children used the 'Van Steenbergh' surname." (Why the name Van Steenbergh was chosen is not known).3

Abraham Jacobussen Van Etten died after 25 December 1784; This date is based on the fact that Abraham Van Etten and Sarah Van Steenberg were sponsors at the baptism of Abraham, son of Petrus Van Etten and Gritie Hyzer, at the Dutch Reformed Church of Rhinebeck Flats, NY.
     According to Abraham's will, per Donald Vannatter, Abraham had two sons, Peter and Benjamin, and seven daughters, Sara, Maria, Catharina, Margaretta, Johana, Rachel and Elizabeth. He was married twice, first to Sara then to a Dewitt. Note that Rebekka and Leah are not mentioned (Ann could be Johana) in his will.

However, a Bible source confirms this entry. Also, Van VanCuren, respected genealogist and author of the VanCuren genealogy, cites Rhinebeck DRC baptism #1640, page 76: Benjamin Van Ette/Catrena Newcerk, child Sarah, b. Apr 11, 1781, bap Jun 3, 1781 (named for Benjamin's mother) sponsored by Ab'm Van Etee and wife Sarah Steenbergh.
