"1298. OLIVER HULL, 1796-1867, druggist, of New York City, and Brooklyn,N. Y., son of (632) John and Mary Avery Hull, was married Aug. 12, 1829, to Rebecca Ann Harriman. Mr. Hull was born in New York City. When he was about four years of age his father moved with his family to the town of Stanford, Dutchess County, N. Y., where there was a settlement of Friends, many of whom were relatives. He received his early education in a boarding school, conducted by Friends at Nine Partners in the same county, which he attended until he was fourteen years of age. Then he was sent to New York to learn the drug business with his brother-in-law, Richard Bowne, whose place of business was at 147 Pearl Street. There he continued his studies, giving special attention to chemistry and attending lectures as opportunities offered on a wide field of scientific subjects. Shortly after reaching his majority he became a member of the firm he had faithfully served. Meantime he had graduated from the New York College of Pharmacy, of which in 1838 he became first vice president, and before which he subsequently delivered a course of lectures on Medical Botany. He was a life member of the New York Mercantile Library Association, and was connected with various other societies and organizations, including the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Society Library Association of New York, and the Masonic Fraternity. In 1845 he moved to the city of Brooklyn, and became associated with the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and the Natural History Society, in both of which he took an active interest, serving at one time as vice-president of the former. Pop-up Pedigree

Oliver Hull was born on 16 March 1731/32 at Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.5 He was the son of John Hull and Damaris Cary. Oliver Hull married Penelope Fones, daughter of Joseph Fones and Penelope Remington, on 19 May 1751 at Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.1,6 Oliver Hull died on 1 August 1803 at age 71.7
He served in the Revolutionary War; An extract from the book, Hulls in the American Revolution 1775-1783, comp. by Phyllis J. Pankonin Hughes, Privately Published 1997, follows: "Patriotic Service, NY. Elder in Society of Friends; cooked provisions for prisoners in the Provost and Sugar House in NYC. On Society of Friends committee for furnishing troops with stockings, mittens, etc. On Friends City Watch committee. Res.: Conanicut Island, Newport Co., RI; New York City, NY. Note: An Oliver Hull, residing in NYC, NY, has also been identified as a Loyalist according to Ref. 6S" [Kelby, William, Oderly Book of the Three Battalions of Loyalists Commanded by Brigadier-General Oliver De Lancy, 1776-1778. Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1972, p. 122]. "Though a Friend, Oliver Hull, the son of John and Damaris (Cary) Hull, took an active, if quiet, part in the Revolution. He married Penelope Ffones (Fones), whose great-grandfather had been one of the most important men of the Colony, and with her he moved to New York a few years before the war. She has been especially honored because of her great kindness to the prisoners during the Revolution. The late Robert Hull, in his pamphlet of the Hull family, gives a very interesting account of the efforts the Quakers made to mitigate the suffering of the American prisoners during the time the British had possession of New York. 'Among the most active of these was Oliver Hull, Robert Murray and his son John. The Long Island Quakers furnished the beef, vegetables, etc., and in the garden of Oliver Hull's house, corner of Beekman and William Streets, these were put into a huge caldron and under Mrs. Hull's directions speedily converted into soup, was soon brought to the famishing prisoners. One day Mrs. Hull, with her daughter Penelope, was passing the old Sugar House in Liberty Street when a prisoner called out from a grated window, 'I hope you won't be discouraged, dear ladies; the rebels are not discouraged; they'll never give up.' When the British took possession of the town, several people were billeted at Oliver Hull's house, one a young officer, Count Saint Leger, of whom they became exceedingly fond, who presented Mr. Hull at parting with a tall staff made of some curious wood and mounted in gold, as a souvenir of his gratitude and friendship. . . .' The son of Oliver and Penelope (Fones) Hull was John Hull III. 314. OLIVER HULL, 1732-1803, of New York City, son of (95) Capt. John and Damaris Cary Hull, was married first May 19, 1751 to Penelope Fones (d.1795), daughter of Joseph Fones and his wife Penelope of Jamestown, R. I. His second wife was Hannah Field, whom he married at Purchase, N. Y., November 16, 1796. Oliver Hull was born and married at Jamestown, but before 1770 became a resident of New York City, and was there engaged with his brother Joseph in commercial pursuits. Oliver Hull was an Elder in the Society of Friends. The 'Book of the Hulls' by his grandson, the late Oliver Hull of New York City, gives some account of his religious life, his trials during the Revolution, and the philanthropic efforts put forth by him and his brother for the relief of the patriots then held as prisoners in the Provost and the Middle Dutch and Sugar House prisons. After the war he and his son John Hull were engaged in business as Importers and Wholesale Druggists under the firm name of Oliver Hull and Son. It is a matter of record that Thomas Fones, apothecary at the Three Fawns, Old Bailey, London, married Anna Winthrop, the sister of John Winthrop, Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. They had a son Samuel, who was the father of John Fones, gentleman, who came to New England and settled at Kingston in 1669, was Clerk of his Majesty's Commission, Recorder of Narragansett Province, a Captain in the forces, and his Majesty's Justice of the Peace in 1683.
This John Fones, gentleman, had a son Jeremiah, who was the father of Joseph Fones, whose daughter Penelope became the wife of Oliver Hull and the mother of his six CHILDREN 628. Abigail Hull, b. The next mention of him in ancient records is under date of Aug. 2, 1688,and recites that Richard Hyat of Barbadoes gives a power of attorney tohis 'trusty and well beloved friend Reuben Hull, of Piscataqua,'merchant, to sell certain lands. He was buried on 29 December 1636 at Crewkerne, Somerset, England.
INTRODUCTION: The Hull Family in America has two main divisions: George Hull and his descendants and his brother, the Reverend Joseph Hull and his descendants. George and Joseph were sons of Thomas and Joane Peson Hull, of Somersetshire, England, the earliest known ancestors of the tribe. George was about five years older than Joseph and came to this country five years earlier, in 1630. What could be learned about them by the efforts of Mr. William G. Hull, of Plymouth, N. H., has been included in the present volume. BIRTH (abt 1522, Crewkerne, Somerset, England): MARRIAGE (11 Jan 1572/3Johane Pysing or Peson; Crewkerne): DEATH (buried Crewkerne 29 Dec 1636): NOTE - He was a prosperous yeoman who was taxed at Crewkerne in theSubsidy of Charles I in 1627. Earlier he lived in Winsham. 'TheCertificate of Musters: for Crewkerne, in 1569, mentioned Thomas Hull, pikeman and Raynold Hull, billman, as part of the local military, with Raynold responsible, with others, to provide arms in connection with a feared invasion by Spain. His will, dated 17 Dec 1636, was proved 10 Feb 1636/7. He left all his goods and chattels to 'my daughter-in-law Edith Hull's four children to be divided between them as shall be most need, by the discretion of John Hull, schoolmaster and John Bere the elder.' Edoth was named executrix in trust for the four children, and John Bell and John Beere were witnesses.: Carl Boyer III 1993.

Pop-up Pedigree

Tristram* H. Hull was born circa 1624 at Northleigh, Devonshire, England.4 He was the son of Rev. Joseph* Hull. Tristram* H. Hull married Blanche Pudley? in 1643 at Yarmouth, MA; (or at Somerset, England).5 Tristram* H. Hull died on 22 February 1666/67 at Barnstable, MA.6
Tristram* H. Hull prepared a will on 30 December 1666. "Tristram Hull, the second son of the Rev. Joseph Hull, was a man of prominence in Barnstable, where he was chosen Selectman, and served on numerous committees, being empowered to buy land from the Indians, for the improvement of the town, etc. Captain Hull was a 'chip off the old block,' and cared for neither King nor Kaiser, when either interfered with what he wished to do. Colonel Hull, in his pamphlet, gives an interesting account of the manner in which Tristram aided an old church member, who had been fined and banished for 'raising his voice' against Quaker persecution. He picked him up bodily, and carried him off in his own ship as far as Sandwich, on the Cape, in direct violation of the law and contempt of the magistrates. When Captain Hull died he left, besides two fine ships, land, etc., œ1150, 5s, 2d. 4. CAPT. TRISTRAM HULL, 1624-1667, of New England, 2nd son of (1) Rev.Joseph Hull and his wife [?Joanna], was in 1643 residing at Yarmouth, where he was enrolled and mustered in the little army of which Miles Standish was 'Captain-General.' In 1643 he was married to Blanche (???),and previous to 1648 moved to Barnstable. Evidently he was bred to a sea-faring career, for he owned a ship named The Catch, was part owner of the bark Hopewell, and frequently made long sea voyages. Customs entries show that he was engaged to a considerable extent in trade with the West Indies. Capt. Hull when 'on shore' took a lively interest in local affairs affecting the wellbeing of Barnstable, was treated with special consideration by his fellow townsmen, and unhesitatingly performed the multifarious duties expected in those days of prominent and public spirited citizens. The records of Barnstable show that he frequently served on juries, was one of the town dignitaries appointed to wait upon the Assembly Committee concerning the town charter, took a leading part in the purchase of town lands from the Indians, served one year as constable, and during the last six years of his life was a leading member of the town board of selectmen. In the government's fanatical and inhuman persecution of the Quakers his sympathies were with the latter, and he boldly rendered them assistance and succor whenever and wherever occasion offered. For this he was subjected to much annoyance and heavy fines, but there is nothing to indicate that this made him change his course. In spite of the government's unjust and cruel attitude toward the Quakers, or rather we should doubtless say because of it, several of his children and many of their descendants publicly espoused the Quaker faith, and some of them became prominent leaders in the denomination. Capt. Hull died at Barnstable, leaving a large estate for one of his age and times. His will is dated Dec. 30, 1666, and was proved on Mar. 12, following. In the inventory of his estate we find record, in addition to the lands and ships above mentioned, of 36 head of cattle assessed at 118 pounds, 5 shillings; cash, 105 pounds, and due the estate, exclusive of an undefined amount 'in hands of the Indians,' 300 pounds. His will provides that his son Joseph shall have the homestead and lands attached and six acres more; that his wife Blanche shall have the use of new portion of house and 150 pounds; that his three daughters shall each have 100 pounds; that his son John shall have a certain lot and 30 pounds; that Robert Davis shall have 3 pounds, and that the residuary estate be divided equally, share and share alike, among his wife and children. A short time after his death his widow was married to a Capt. Hedge, who was old enough to have been her father, and from whom she soon separated. CHILDREN

     650. WAGER HULL, 1779-1849, manufacturer, of New York City, son of (317)Joseph and Phebe Palmer Hull, was married Oct. 8, 1801, in BurlingtonMeeting of Friends, to Elizabeth Cox, 1779(???), daughter of Samuel Coxand his wife Sarah Emsley, of Moorstown, N. J. He was the youngest son ofa large family, and after receiving such education as was then to beobtained in private schools, joined his elder brother in New York City.As tallow chandlers and toilet and laundry soap makers, their businesshad rapidly grown to large proportions, and for many years was almost amonopoly in the hands of several of the family. Branching off from theolder house, he securely established himself in business before hismarriage and founded the house known in domestic and foreign trade asWager Hull, Hull & Berling, Wager Hull & Son, Wager Hull's Son, John C.Hull & Sons and J. C. Hull's Sons. They were large exporters and shippersof their own products. The house after an existence of nearly one hundredyears ceased operations only when the main branch of their industry wasdriven from the market by the introduction of illuminating gas and thediscovery of oil wells. Wager Hull was devotedly attached to the religious opinions, doctrinesand principles as held by his pious ancestors who for several generationshad been members of the Society of Friends. Before and after the greatschism in the society, he maintained a consistent position, and joinedwith the orthodox branch at the time of the separation. Throughout life he was wise and zealous in every form of church work andactive in charitable and reformatory projects. He was a student of churchhistory and particularly conversant with the histories of Quaker andPuritan. In several controversies concerning both doctrine and history heheld his own with much dexterity. As an epistle writer he was master ofthe best style then affected and approved by Friends. Living in the daysof the decline of Quakerism he advocated some modification of their'discipline,' and a more liberal and enlightened interpretation of their'law.' Cant and bigotry and its other phase, hypocrisy, he despised andreproved, whether displayed by Quaker or Churchman. The following iscondensed from an obituary notice which appeared in the New York Tribuneof August 22, 1849: For nearly half a century he has sustained the social and businessrelations of an honorable and upright man in this community. . . .. Thehistory of his mercantile career presents a rare exception to theordinary maxims and habits of trade. It has been well remarked by one whowas well acquainted with the ruling principles of his conduct, thatextraordinary uprightness and freedom from selfishness alone preventedhis becoming a man of great wealth. The opportunity was before him, andit was necessary only that he stretch out his hand to seize it; but hechose happiness and an approving conscience rather than superfluousriches. The temptations of gain could not seduce him from the course dictated bymoderate desires and confirmed by deliberate judgment. . . . . Equanimityof disposition was one of the most marked traits of his character. He wasa stranger to passion and resentment, even under circumstances of greattrial and injury. . . . . He was a man of unostentatious benevolence, with a hand always open, and willing to relieve the wants of the poor;and the possession of an income equal to his desires enabled him tofulfill, in this respect, the duties of a brother and a christian. . . .As a religious man, he was free from all color of bigotry. The faithfulobservance of the duties of christian worship, according to his ownconvictions of right, did not prevent him from treating with entirerespect different opinions and modes of service conscientiously adheredto by others. He regarded conduct, not profssion, as the true test ofdevotion and love of God. . . . . In the life of such a man, there ismore to command a sincere admiration than he claimed for the mostbrilliant success in public station, or in the tempting field ofcommercial enterprise; fame and riches win the applause of the world, while real worth is overlooked and neglected; but the actions of men liveafter them, and although their names may be unknown to history, the mostgrateful memories are of the unostentatious good. Wager Hull died at his residence at Mt. Vernon, East River, New YorkCity, after a short and severe illness. He left a fair estate quite ampleto meet all the real and many of the imaginary requirements of thegeneration succeeding him. CHILDREN 1,377. Thomas Emley Hull, b.
