Joseph Fones married Penelope Remington, daughter of Stephen Remington and Penelope Parker, on 15 May 1725 at Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.1 Joseph Fones died after 1778.
     He served in the Revolutionary War; Joseph Fones had the distinction of being the oldest Ensign, so far recorded, in the Revolutionary War. He was born May 11, 1699; responding to an alarm call, July 30, 1778, in his seventy-ninth year, he was created Ensign and served seven days, for which he received sixteen shillings. He lived in Canonicut, R. I., and married there Penelope Remington, of the Rhode Island family.
