John Cary was born on 9 December 1674 at Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA.² He was the son of John Cary and Abigail Penniman. John Cary married Damaris Arnold, daughter of Oliver Arnold and Phoebe Cook, on 3 March 1699/0.³ John Cary died on 11 December 1739 at Bristol, RI, at age 65.
'The ancient family of Cary derives its name from the manor of Cary, or Karri, in the Parish of St. Giles, in the Heath, near Launceston, 1198.8. . . The intermediate descents of Cary from Adam (de Karry), are given in the visitations of Devon, 1620.' This line of John Cary, the colonist, from Alfred the Great, has recently been traced. A. E. E.
