October 22, Drew
Kerns - Horn
Andrew Kearns has been
principal horn of the Foothills Philharmonic for the past three years.
He began playing horn under the guidance of his father, William Kearns,
professor of horn and music history at the University of Colorado at
Boulder. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the
University of Colorado, a Master of Music and Ph.D in Musicology from
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Master of Library
and Information Science from the University of South Carolina at
Columbia.
He is presently a librarian at Clemson University, but has also taught
music appreciation at Furman University and other schools. He is a
specialist in music of the late-eighteenth century, and has published
research on the genres of the concerto and orchestral serenade as well
as scholarly editions of eighteenth-century music. His edition of the
Serenade in D Major by Antonio Rosetti was given its modern premier by
the Foothills Philharmonic last February.
In addition to his scholarship, Andrew has maintained an interest in
musical performance. His musical training included four summers at
Rocky Ridge Music Center near Estes Park, Colorado, an experience that
instilled in him a love for chamber music. He has regularly played with
student and community orchestras and bands, including the Jefferson
Symphony (Golden, Colorado), and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony
(Illinois).
Andrew lives in Greenville with his wife Sofía and son
Tomás.
