Gen 1:1-5
(1) In the beginning God
created the heaven and the earth.
(Note 1: God was from
before “the beginning”, else He could not have been there in the beginning.)
(Note 2: It does not say
that God created the world, though He did, this is reference to the substance
called “earth”, In the Bible “World” is reference to mankind)
God was not created, He has always been, and will always be. God was in eternity past, and is still in eternity, God exists outside of time. Time began in the beginning, when God created the heaven and the earth. Therefore God is not bound by time; God binds time.
EX: If you were ever young, and played with dolls or toy soldiers. How many doll or soldier days went by while you were sitting there for an hour or two? You were not bound by the doll or soldiers time, they were bound by the time you declared it to be! Very much the same, Time began when God began it, He is in control of it, and it will end when He determines it is the end of time. Just as when you were done playing with your dolls or soldiers, you were done. You existed before the doll or soldier’s time began, and you existed after the doll or soldiers time ended. It’s sort of the same with God.
(Note 2:”God” in verse 1 comes from the Hebrew “Elohiym” meaning plural, else the Hebrew would have used the word “Elowahh”)
This makes it necessary for us to look closer at the next few verses to determine who was there in this plurality or “multiple persons” of God.
(Note 3: God Created: Not a big
bang! See handout on Big Bang – Man’s wisdom)
1Co 1:18-21 - For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish
foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is
written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing
the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe?
where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of
this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew
not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that
believe.
1Co 2:1-7 - And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with
excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For
I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear,
and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing
words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That
your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this
world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to naught: But we speak
the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before
the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for
had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
(2) And the earth was without form,
and void; and darkness was upon the face
of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
(Note 1: The term used ‘The Spirit of God”: This word “God” again is referring to the Plurality or multiple persons of God; also note the identifier “Spirit”, this identifies which part of this “multiple persons” of God we are referring to)
The Spirit of God is
also known as the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost.
(Note 2: The description of the earth
I.
Before God moved
A. Without Form – (no
substance)
a. Strong’s Hebrew and
Chaldee Dictionary – Hebrew word “tohuw” = empty place, nothing
B. Void – (no space taken
up)
a. Strong’s Hebrew and
Chaldee Dictionary - Hebrew word “bohuw’ = to be empty, Vacuity
b. Webster’s Dictionary:
Vacuity = The state of being unfilled; unfilled or unoccupied = Translation:
Ain’t nothing there!
II.
When God Moved
A. Darkness – (unknown)
a. Strong’s Hebrew and
Chaldee Dictionary – Hebrew word “choshek”= ignorance, misery. )
God took no substance and put it in no space and made something unknown to eternity! A ball of water, He called Earth.
(Note 3: The Spirit of
God “moved upon the face of the waters” - Webster’s Dictionary = on, at, or in
contact with)
Some versions say “Hovered over” This is incorrect: Moved upon means traveled on, at, or in contact with; Hovered over means floated above – These are different terms
(3) And God said, Let there be light:
and there was light.
(Note 1: “Light” comes from the Hebrew word “owr” = illumination, happiness.)
When God said, “let there be light”, in essence He was saying let this unknown thing that came from nothing and nowhere be illuminated. When we illuminate something we make sure it is known. But this illumination was not the sun, rather His Son, hence explaining the happiness part of the definition.
John 8:12 - Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
1Pe 1:18-21 - Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by
tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a
lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the
foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who
by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory;
that your faith and hope might be in God.
Rev 13:8 - And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him,
whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the
foundation of the world.
EX:
When you are stumbling your way through a dark room, and you stub your toes on
furniture that you can’t see, or you trip over a toy or a stool. When you
finally make it to the light switch and illuminate the room, there is a certain
level of Happiness involved.
(Note 2: We see a speaker, “God said”, this is the voice of the Father; when there is a voice from heaven, it is the voice of the Father (Mat 3:16-17). We also see how in the aforementioned verses, the Light was the light of the Son of God, who was not created, but rather did create with God the Father and the Spirit. John 1:1-14 should clear things up a little)
Mat 3:16-17 - And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway
out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the
Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice
from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
John 1:1-14 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All
things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in
darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from
God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the
Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was
sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth
every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world
was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his
own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to
become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born,
not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the
glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
(4) And God saw the light, that it was
good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
(5) And God called the light Day, and
the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first
day.
(Note 1: Light vs. Darkness)
1Th 5:5-10 - Ye are all the children of light, and the children
of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore
let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that
sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith
and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed
us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us,
that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
1Jo 1:5 - This then is the message which we have heard of him, and
declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Pe 2:9 - But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who
hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:
Eph 5:8 - For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in
the Lord: walk as children of light:
1Jo 2:11 - But he that hateth his brother is in darkness,
and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness
hath blinded his eyes.
2Co 4:3-4 - But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are
lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which
believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image
of God, should shine unto them.
Joh 8:44 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts
of your father ye will do…
God didn’t guess the light was good, He saw that it was
good. God divided the good from the evil. The Good was day, the evil night.
Good was Christ, Evil was Satan. This was declared in the Earth from its
foundation. The Children of Christ are the Children of the day; the children of
Satan are the children of night. God gave us a contrasting choice from the
beginning of the World – We will see that same principle in the Garden of Eden.
