Gen 1:14-19
(14)
And
God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide
the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for
days, and years:
(Note 1: This is the
first mention of the Physical lights – The previous lights were Spiritual – The
light of the Glory of God – His Son Jesus - Recall: v: 3 – “Light” = Hebrew
“Owr” = Illumination – Happiness – Kind of like that glow when someone is real
cheerful or happy about something – it is not a tangible light. This word light
in verse 14 is not the same word. This is the Hebrew “Maorah” = Luminous Body –
light as an element – A physical object of illumination – The Sun, Moon &
Stars – actual objects - tangible)
(Note 2: The lights were designed with the purpose of dividing the physical night from the physical day – In verse 4 we see the Day divided from the Night by the Light of v: 3. Which was again a spiritual occurrence. Here we have the Physical occurrence in verse 14. Duly note the difference!)
Verse 14a is the physical
manifestation of the Spiritual truth found in Verses 3 & 4. Just as Jesus
Christ was the Physical Manifestation of the Spiritual Truths God had been
revealing throughout the Old Testament:
a. Noah and the Ark – The Ark delivered Noah and his Family
because they acted in faith – Christ will save all who believe act in faith –
call on his name;
b. Abraham, Isaac & the ram caught in a thicket – The ram
was the substitute sacrifice in Isaacs place, as Christ was the substitute
sacrifice in our place;
c. Joseph and his Family that sold him into bondage – Christ
was sold into bondage and for our sins;
d. Moses delivered Israel out of the bondage of Egypt as Christ
has delivered us from the bondage of sin
e. Joshua Led Israel into the land that flowed with milk and
honey, With him as their leader they defeated all their enemies (except for
when there was sin in the camp), as Christ will lead us in a victorious life if
we follow Him
God was showing Man that He was
going to send a deliverer to those who were destined to die, and all you had to
do was follow that deliverer to life by faith, unto victory!!)
“Let them be for signs, and
for seasons, and for days, and years:”
(Note 1: Signs = “owth”: (in the sense of appearing) beacon, monument, evidence – Nothing mystical here folks!! The stars were never supposed to be anything more than a way for man to know the times)
(Note 2: Seasons = “Mowadah”: an appointment, fixed time
or season)
This is indicative of the
necessity for man to keep time. This is the origin of our calendar. The native
Indians used the time reference “many moons ago” Time was determined by how
many full moons had passed since a given event. Have you ever taken a stick and stuck it in the ground, and
watched its shadows rotation as the day goes by? If you label N S W & E it
will be a clock. When the shadow of the stick is facing due North it is Noon,
due east it is 3:00, west 9:00, South 6:00.
God made it possible for man to know time.

And
let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the
earth: and it was so.
God’s intention was for the earth to have physical lights as well as The Spiritual Light From Verse 3.

And
God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser
light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
(Note 1: Here we see the two
lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser to rule the night.
This is another physical manifestation of a Spiritual Truth:
a.
We
are the Children of Light; we follow Christ, and He has supreme rule in our
lives.
i.
Joh 12:35-36; ”Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did
hide himself from them.
ii.
(Eph 5:8) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye
light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
iii.
(1Th 5:5) Ye are all the children of light, and the
children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
b.
If
we are not Christ’s, we follow the lesser light, Satan, and he has supreme rule
in our lives.
i.
(2Co 11:14) And no marvel; for Satan himself is
transformed into an angel of light.
ii.
(Joh 8:42-45) Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded
forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even
because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are
of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He
was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is
no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a
liar, and the father of it. And because
I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.)
(Note 2: We also see the stars. Smaller lights, not as significant. There are many others who claim to be the light. Mohammed, Buddha, the Pope, Joseph Smith, Allah and so on. However, they all exist in the night, they are of darkness. Christ alone “ The Greater Light” Rules the day, and the children of the day!)

And
God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
(18)
And
to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the
darkness: and God saw that it was good.
We must remember, God has created
all Things and has placed all things where they are, and that to please
Himself. By His own will
(Eph 1:11) In whom also we have obtained an
inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who
worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
(Heb 2:4) God also bearing them witness, both
with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according
to his own will?

And
the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
