and then there was light ...
LASER LITE at that !

I managed to get ahold of a COHERENT I-90-M laser ...  supposedly a 5 watt tube at 40 A at 230V

after studying the existing pieces parts I came to the conclusion that there was parts missing and shorted out electronics

sooo...  the fun stuff began ...   I basically remade the power supply and used some rather large resistors to drive the base of the pass bank

here are some pictures of the tube running

the laser COHERENT  I-90- M  being driven by a home made power supply  with a 250 ohm resistor driving the base of the pass bank
what I gathered from the Coherent web site was that this thing is a 5 Watt output tube

picture

here it is at 230VDC input with 220VDC across the tube running at 15A on the tube side  (( thats a Cyonics SLB in the background...  and behind the beam is the beginnings of a CO2 laser))

a close up of the output end of the tube running at 220VDC at 15A with the lights off

picture

a view of the beam "down view" running at the same previous power

picture

another view of the beam running at the same power going away from the beam ( following beam travel)
and yesss.....   that is a TRIMEDYNE 25 watt laser off to the left of the picture  :)

picture

a shot of the beam reflecting off of the back side of the house   ( still at 220VDC @ 15 A )

picture

a bit more power added    240VDC @ 20A tube wise burning a piece of walnut wood

picture

some more power ...   250VDC @ 25 A  lighting a cigarette as soon as it is placed into the beam

pic

a low power test of reflecting the beam into a vial of rhodium (?) dye  it produces blue light after it passes thru it ...
