Baptist served in the lower house of the 36th General Assembly of the state legislature representing Lake and Obion Counties 1869-1871.  I got this information from a list of past representatives received from the Archives in Nashville.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and early merchant; story goes that he owned the first store in Mason Hall, a charter member of the first organized worship, the Methodist Church, possibly 1835 for church organization.  At one time worship services were held in members' home and at that time, it was referred to as Boyett's Chapel.  The Boyetts were instrumental in the building of the church, i.e., monies, etc.  I believe the church and the cemetery, for a while were referred to as Boyett's.  A memorial service dated in 1947 mentions Boyett's Chapel, etc.  The church was torn down many years ago and the cemetery is now the Mason Hall Cemetery - several Boyetts are buried there, including Baptist and his second wife.  Other information I have is that he served as public tax collector for Obion County from 1852 - 1853 and again in 1856.  He served as magistrate and postmaster in 1856.  Baptist also served as a Justice of the Peace from 12/26/1849 - 02/1852.  The information and dates for service as tax collector and postmaster, I believe, I got it from a local history book written by Mr. Haywood Green, who is still living but quite elderly and in very poor health.

William B. Boyett, M. D., is a native of Gibson County, born on the 1st of September, 1830, son of Hon. Baptist and Mahulda (Crane) Boyett, who were born in North Carolina. Hon. Baptist Boyett was a merchant at Mason Hall, in Obion County, and at one time represented Obion and Lake Counties in the State Legislature. Dr. William Boyett was reared on his parents' farm, and was educated in Bethel College, at McLemoresville, Tenn. In 1853 he began the study of medicine, with Dr. Charles Powell, of Gibson County, and in 1857 attended one course of lectures at the University of Nashville. After his return to Obion County, he practiced medicine until 1875, when he moved to the "Lone Star State," and there remained until 1882. Since that time he has lived in Tennessee, and is considered one of the reliable and efficient physicians of Gibson County. October 14, 1858, he united his fortunes with those of Elizabeth Waddy, daughter of William K. and Elizabeth (Hankins) Waddy. She died in October, 1863, leaving two children: James M. and Charles D. April 20, 1865, Mr. Boyett married Nannie L. Bynum, daughter of Eli and Luvica Bynum, of Kentucky. They have two sons and two daughters: Baptist P., William L., Elizabeth T. and Mary L. Dr. Boyett is a Democrat, and is a member of the F. A. M., and has been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church since 1850.
