Kenny’s Story
in His Own Words:
Eight years ago, I learned that I had contracted the Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome (AIDS). I continued to live in my own apartment, but eventually, I
was unable to continue in my job. I was fortunate to obtain a position with
the NO/AIDS Task Force, where I worked with the Food for Friends program.
Three years ago, however, I spent three weeks in the hospital. My condition
had worsened and I knew I could not continue to live alone. A friend of
mine told me about Belle Reve, a housing program for people who are
HIV/AIDS positive. Fortunately, there was an opening. I have lived here for
the past three and one-half years. Belle Reve has assisted me in obtaining
my medications. They have also provided me with transportation to my
doctors’ appointments. All of my needs are being met. There are twelve
individuals living here; in the building next door, there is one couple and
a mother with her children. I have come to terms with my illness. I will
stay here as long as I possibly can. I try to be as helpful as I can; it is
the least I can do to repay the wonderful staff of Belle Reve for all they
have done for me.
Kenny was presented
with the “Volunteer of the Year” Award for 2002. Everyone at Belle Reve
appreciates Kenny’s positive attitude and helpfulness.
