“ABC AND MRI“

There are many ways to look at the church…
     a place…a people…a leader…a purpose…a history…a future…a calling…
           a _________… a ______________…a _______________ (fill in the blank)
Is the church a refuge from the world?
Is the church a source of nourishment for our walk in the world?
Is the church a place for folks who have been healed and appear to be well?
Is the church a place for the sick to gather for healing?
Is the church a “bird bath” that welcomes all?
Is the church a “bird cage” that identifies who’s in and who’s out?
Is the church the place where we encounter God
and offer God our very best praise and gratitude?
Is the church the place where God’s voice calls us to discipleship
and sends us out into the world scared to death,
but equipped by gifts that give us courage and faith for the tasks?
One current “church observer” offers two visions of the church:
     “ABC churches” are concerned about attendance, buildings, and cash;
“MRI churches” focus on being missional, relational, incarnational”.
“ABC churches” deal with issues of survival (and we dare not forget those issues)…
“MRI churches” look ultimately toward our overall life together,
our calling in the name of Christ to the ministry of the Spirit.
MRI churches don’t just look to the present “ABC” concerns,
but to the future and how we best respond as a community
to the voice of God calling us to mission in the midst of life.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church family,
please pray constantly for our church’s life together
that we may truly learn our ABC’s in order to be faithfully MRI.

Note from the Treasurer: April results are a classic good news/bad news scenario.  The good news is that our Unpledged offerings are running very close to budget.  This is unusual because it is very difficult to ‘guesstimate’ what we will receive in unpledged offerings.  The bad news is that those of us that pledged (and thus made it easier on the Finance Committee to plan a budget) have missed the boat in April, with pledged giving barely half of what was budgeted.  As our finance chairman points out elsewhere, this has provided us with a challenge as the summer months arrive.  Please review your pledge status and help us weather the summer months if possible.  As always, if you have any questions or need further information, please contact me at 444-0800 x815.

STEWARDSHIP & FINANCE COMMITTEE

The Finance Committee recently met and reviewed the budget status. While we appear to be holding expenses at or under budget, we are looking at a significant cash shortfall heading into the summer months. At the end of April we had about $17,000 in cash on hand. Last year we had about $60,000 in the bank at this time. Although we can defer some expenses, we have about $28,000 per month in costs that must be met. We recently sent pledge statements – please review your giving status and consider catching up or accelerating your contributing so that we can ‘cash flow’ the summer months. If you did not receive a statement, or have questions about your statement, please call our Treasurer, Bill Lentz, at 444-0800 x815.

FRED PAXTON FUND RUN

The annual Fred Paxton Fund Run will take place at 8:00 am, Saturday, July 19, at Noble Park. Bellewood in Paducah is one of the participating charities this year, and the Evangelism & Outreach Committee has recommended that we direct our donations to Bellewood. In order to receive matching funds, Bellewood must raise a minimum of $2,500. (All donations up to $10,000 will be matched.) Our challenge is to raise as much as we possibly can to help Bellewood attain at least the minimum $2,500.
Last year 37 First Presbyterians were spotted at Noble Park on Fund Run day - 27 participants, 6 volunteers, and a cheering section of 4. Five of our adults were awarded first place trophies in their age groups. Four of our children participated, three of whom were among the very youngest.
This year’s goal is to have 50 of our members at the park on race day. Put it on your calendar now!
There are folders, which include entry forms and forms for donations, at each entrance to the sanctuary.

FELLOWSHIP HALL
SUNDAY SCHOOL

In June and July, the Fellowship Hall Sunday School class will get the opportunity to meet with members of our community who work with agencies that minister to various needs that arise in people’s lives and those who work in areas that involve the quality of life for citizens of our area. Please plan to come hear and speak with these guests so you can perhaps see where the church and your particular gifts might best be called to service in Christ’s name. The church is not just what we are and do when we gather, but as much what we are and do in Christ’s name when we are scattered.

SESSION MEETING

The Session will meet at 7:00pm, Sunday, July 27 for our summer meeting.

FAITH IN FILM SERIES

“Whale Rider” will be hosted by United Church of Paducah on June 9 at 6:30. Here’s a synopsis of the movie:
Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny. (Rated PG-13 for language and a momentary drug reference.)
“Simon Birch” will be hosted by the Methodists on July 14 at 6:30. Here’s a synopsis of the movie:
Simon Birch believes that God made him for a special, heroic purpose. Simon and his best friend Joe Wenteworth are both outcasts in their tiny New England town: Joe is the illegitimate son of the town beauty, and Simon, at age 12, is so small that he still plays the infant Jesus in the church Christmas pageant. Ultimately, a situation arises that demands a hero - a very small hero. (Rated PG for language, emotional thematic elements, and an accident scene.)

P.I.G.S.

“Presbyterians Interested in Going to Supper” will share a meal before the Faith in Film feature at 5:15, Monday, June 9 at Whaler’s Catch. They will have a heavy appetizer seafood buffet prepared for us ($13pp includes meal, tax and tip, drink not included). Please use the tear-offs in Sunday bulletins or call the church office to make a reservation for the meal. They will have us in and out by 6:15. The restaurant for the Monday, July 14 movie will be announced in June bulletins.

A RIDE IS ONLY A PHONE CALL AWAY

The church does have occasional events in the evening.  And it is important that everyone who wants to be here is here.  So, if you want to be here and you need a ride, all you have to do is call the church (442-3545).  We will make sure someone contacts you and arranges a time and place to pick you up and get you safely home.  It’s just as easy as that.   Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you at evening events.

EVANGELISM AND OUTREACH
COMMITTEE

MAY MISSION PROJECT

TOWELS AND WASH
CLOTHS

The Evangelism and Outreach Committee is leading a campaign to collect towels (bath and dish) and wash cloths for Paducah Cooperative Ministry (PCM). These items will be used to help the needs of those living in the shelter community, as well as others seeking assistance.

Donated items may be dropped off any day in the church office or placed in the shopping cart in the rear of the sanctuary. Monetary donations may also be made to assist in the purchasing of these items.

Working together, we do make a difference to the community and its residents.

If you have questions, please contact Nancy Flowers, committee chair, or Renie or Don Barger.
